The pikes and other weapons picked up off the field at Bonnymuir were taken to Stirling Castle along with the prisoners. Lieutenant Hodgson detailed what they were and supervised them being put into sealed boxes. ‘I think there were sixteen pikes and one pike handle, and a pitchfork, and five muskets or guns of different kinds, and two pistols.’13 The radical army had no swords.

A number of the pikes wielded at Bonnymuir still exist and are in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. Sit looking at them for a while and a number of charged and emotionally conflicting images and thoughts spring to mind. The pike-heads are of different designs. One looks like a Lochaber axe. Others are slimmer, pointed spikes. Some are roughly hewn, others more finely made. They are all vicious, potentially lethal to man and horse alike. Yet they were made for and by men who had such high hopes, getting their courage up as they readied themselves to go out and fight for their rights.
